Making Music at El Nido
Added Depth for Children at the El Nido Enrichment Center

In 2021, a local individual supporter donated a piano to El Nido. This individual's singular act gave birth to a new vision for children at El Nido. In addition to the Art Class, the Reading Club, and the Computer Lab, the Enrichment Center could also be a place where musical curiosity is cultivated and talent explored. Adding a Music Class to the Enrichment Center would give children who have been exposed to trauma another safe, creative outlet. Music has a special role in healing. Maya Angelou attests to this sharing, "Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the spaces between the notes and curl my back to loneliness".
Last week, powered by funds from the San Diego Foundation Unity Grant and the San Diego County District Attorney Community Grant, El Nido launched its new music class in partnership with the City Heights Music School (CHMS). One of the CHMS teachers came to the Enrichment Center at El Nido to begin the weekly lessons, with the ukulele being the first instrument taught.
The El Nido staff work hard to cultivate opportunities for children through caring and creative partnerships!
